An Arizona police officer was shot and wounded when he was part of a response that interrupted suspects breaking into cars early Wednesday.
The shooting happened shortly before 1:30 a.m. after Maricopa police received a call from someone reporting that three people breaking into cars in a neighborhood, KTVK-TV reports. The caller told police they followed the suspects but stopped when one of the individuals threatened them with a gun.
When police reached the scene, they interrupted the suspects trying to break into a park car. The suspects fled on foot, with one running down a nearby street and the other two hopping a fence and heading in the direction of Gila River Reservation.
One of the suspects heading toward the reservation began shooting, and an officer was struck. Another officer returned fire and shot one of the suspects, who died on the way to the hospital.
The wounded police officer was rushed to the hospital and is in stable condition.
Because the shooting occurred on reservation land, the FBI is investigating the incident.
